The winter season is a great time to sneak in some fishing. The rivers are flowing, the solitude is nice, and in certain conditions the fishing can be fantastic. The biggest thing to know about winter fishing is that it is all about calories in vs. calories out for the fish. Because of this, you can find high concentrations of willing trout in small areas. These trips usually last 5-6 hours depending on weather. These trips are generally best for wade fishing. However, depending on when spring decides to arrive here in southwest Montana, floats can be a blast. Generally we are nymphing during these trips, but for those willing to shoot for the stars some large fish can be taken on streamers. Additionally, when weather permits (calm wind and warmer days) the dry fly fishing can be fantastic. Ideally a calm and warmer day is best. Anything in the 25- 45 degree range is ideal. Give the shop a call to inquire about a winter fishing trip. Book an inexpensive trip, and let our expert guides show you how to pile up some fish during the cold months of the long Montana winter.
