Fishing Report:
If you can believe it, it's January and there's still floatable stretches on the Yellowstone right now... But with the variable and at times brutal winds you might not want to dunk a boat over here for anything longer than a few miles. With temps dropping there has been some slush and floating ice, but generally it's warmed up enough during the day to be fishable. There is enough open water over here to float, most guys have been concentrating their pursuits around the Livingston area as that's where the water is the most consistently open and there's also a lot of spring creek water coming into the river. If you do go, check with the shuttle companies before throwing a boat in...
Ditto on the approach as it's still winter and nymphing is the most productive over here, it's also the best way to stack a pile of whitey's - your standard fare of Yellowstone nymphs would be a good place to start. Some stonefly immitations, smaller and darker are typically better, couple that with some midges, some eggs and some worm immitations and never underestimate the old hare's ears and prince nymphs in the winter. If you do want to toss streamers I've always done best with black in the winter, slower retrieves and look for the froggy water.
Definitely some risers eating midges over here as well, bring along some midge immitations with you and hope that the wind doesn't blow!
