Growing up in Billings, Montana, John spent his childhood fishing the Bighorn, Stillwater and Boulder rivers. John learned to fly fish at an early age from his father, Mike Mahoney, and credits his father for much of his angling success.

John attended college part time in Coos Bay, Oregon, where he learned to fish for steelhead and salmon. In '05, John came back home, sort of, to MSU and is currently pursuing his scholarly career in Business Marketing.

John's knowledge of the area and fly fishing is only surpassed by his friendly attitude. John is a big reason why we have by far the most knowledgeable and friendly staff in town.
