Pheasant Tail

Fly recipe

Hook: Nymph Hook 3X Long (Dai Riki #730)
Thread: Black 6/0 Uni Thread
Tail: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Body: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Rib: Copper Wire
Wing Case: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Wings: Pheasant Tail Fibers
Bead: Gold Bead

Tying instructions:

Step 1: Secure your hook in the vise and attach the thread to the hook.

Step 2: Slide bead over bend. Tie in thread at eye of hook and wrap back to bend. Tie in pheasant tails leaving the stems laying over the shank of the hook.

Step 3: Tie in ribbing at the rear of the hook and leave at hook bend, wrap thread underneath pheasant fibers and to the ¾ point on the hook.

Step 4: Now wrap the pheasant fibers forward to ¾ point on the hook leaving room for the peacock herl.

Step 5: At this point you will have the pt fibers bound with the thread, tie in several strands of peacock herl and wrap forward to the bead. Here now tie in another clump of pheasant tail fibers and split down the sides to make wings.

Step 6: After tying in the wings and securing, pull the remaining fibers over the top of the herl and tie off to create the wing case. Whip finish or half hitch and you are done.

Notes: Pheasant Tail's are a go to for many anglers countrywide. One of the original and still one of the best mayfly nymphs that you can use year round, I typically won't go fishing without having a few pheasant tails in my box. The beadhead I believe is a nice touch, plus for you beginning tyers out there, you will find it a lot easier to start out with beads on most of your flies as it will help hide your nasty looking heads… To change this bug up, add krystal flash or pearl tinsel instead of the pheasant tail fibers for the wings or wingcase, it adds a bit of pizzazz to your ho-hum flies.
