Wire Worm

Fly recipe

Hook: Scud or Emerger Hook (Dai Riki #135 #125) Size # 6-12
Thread: Fl Orange or Whatever Color You Desire for the Band in Flat Waxed Nylon or Flymaster Plus
Body: Medium or Large UTC Wire in Red, Orange, Brown or Whatever Your Favorite Color of Worm Might Be

Tying instructions:

Step 1: Find your worst and least favorite bobbin, maybe one that already ruins thread because it has grooves in it… you don't want to use a nice one for this. Load up a spool of the wire into it, this is going to be used for your body.

Step 2: Secure the hook in the vise and begin wrapping the wire at the very back bend of the hook.

Step 3: Do not wrap the wire over itself, instead just make one wrap right next to the other ensuring there aren't any noticeable gaps in the wire body.

Step 4: Once you have covered the entire hook with your desired color of wire, simply twist off the remaining wire on both ends of the hook.

Step 5: Now attach the thread to the middle of the hook and make thread wraps to form a small band in the middle of the worm, whip finish and cut the thread after building the band.

Step 6: Now to ensure that the wire doesn't chip or fade, make one to two heavy coats of flex-seal over the wire and thread. Allow to dry and you are done.

Notes: Despite what you might hear from people on size, shape, coloring, movement in the water… This fly works, and that's no lie. The "Wire Worm" is a simple effective way to quickly tie a bunch of San Juan worms that you will end up fishing effectively. All too often we get too intricate in our tying in the belief that something we added will work better because its different and we took the time to add it. This fly pattern is effective because of what's not there - you haven't invested much time in tying this fly so you will fish it with reckless abandon, throwing it in places you wouldn't normally put your nicely tied bugs and thus you will catch more fish. At least that's my theory. Fish this with the egg for my favorite combo, franks and beans…
